Fred Mayer is a Vietnam veteran who says he he can poach an egg and clean his dishes at the same time. He says that a couple of years ago the well that supplies water to his house in Candor, N.Y., started becoming polluted with natural gas. Now he can hold a lighter up to his running water in the kitchen and flashes of fire spew from the faucet.
Now that may seem really awesome, but experts say that if the faucet emits too much natural gas, he could have a slight explosion problem. Mayer suspects that drilling by the energy company, Fortuna Energy Inc. is at fault, but state environmental officials say this gas is o-natural, created in the ground below Mayer's house.
